WHY THEY WON:

The scorching end of the season continues for the Ottawa Senators and confidence grew on Wednesday for another young wave of players including Shane Pinto, Erik Brannstrom and Alex Formenton.

If the Senators can continue their streak from the current 7-1-1 series until the start of the 2021-22 season, they could very well have a chance to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Against the Canadiens, Pinto camped on the edge of the crease to score his first NHL goal. Brannstrom, playing bigger minutes in the absence of Thomas Chabot, scored the first three-point game of his career. Formenton also showed his blazing speed, catching Canadiens defensemen and goaltender Jake Allen with a flat foot.

Make no mistake about it, winning is always better than losing and there is experience gained in every situation, but how do you really measure what is happening at this time of year, based on the lineups that are on the ice? ?

For the Senators, the club’s highest paid goaltender (Matt Murray), highest paid defenseman (Chabot) and highest paid forward (Dadonov) have all been sidelined with injury. By the way, is there any chance the Senators will leave Dadonov and the two years and $ 10 million left on his contract unprotected in the Seattle expansion draft?

On the Canadiens’ side, the organization is giving goaltender Carey Price all the time he needs to fully recover from his concussion for the biggest prize – the playoffs. Captain Shea Weber and winger Brendan Gallagher also remain out with injuries and Jonathan Drouin is on leave.

Even as the Canadiens and Jets battle for third place in the North Division, the ultimate goal is to win the playoffs. The healthier and more rested the players, the better their chances.

That said, Canadiens fans should have been clearly disappointed with Montreal’s effort against the brave and hungrier Senators.

In September and October, it will be fun to see the Senators start the season while letting the kids try to lead the way, rather than having veterans in their path.

The situation for goalkeepers will also be convincing.

After Wednesday’s win, Senators coach DJ Smith said Murray is clearly number one, but the depth and options behind him are intriguing. Between Anton Forsberg, Filip Gustavsson and Joey Daccord, it looks like there are a number of replacement options if Murray is injured and / or struggling. Again, two of those three will be available for the Seattle in the expansion project.

THEY SAID IT

Ottawa Senators coach DJ Smith.

“We made a commitment to come back (to our zone) as a group of five, to limit the odds against and I think we did a good job. We blocked the shots we had to take and we followed and we didn’t give up a lot of weird man races and when you do that you have a chance to stay in the game.

Ottawa Senators rookie center Shane Pinto on his first NHL goal

“I just decided to go to the far post and luckily it came straight to me and I shot pretty hard at the back of the net. If you watch the replay I don’t think I must have turned it so hard, but I’m just glad it came in.

Ottawa Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg on his win and signing a new contract on the same day.

“It’s good to know where I will be next year and especially after this season. I am very happy. It’s been a tough season, but I’m happy to be here now.

THE NUMBERS GAME

Plus 4: Artem Zub recorded the best over / under night of his career, while delivering two assists in 22:12 of ice time.

11:48 p.m .: Victor Mete’s ice time, the Senators’ highest, as he played against a Canadiens team that put him on waivers last month.

30 : Stops by Anton Forsberg, who signed a one-year contract extension with the Senators earlier today.

20: Goalless games for Canadiens center Jesperi Kotkaniemi, drafted third overall in 2019, a pick ahead of Senators’ Brady Tkachuk. Kotkaniemi has collected four assists in 20 games.

AND AFTER?

From Winnipeg to Montreal via Winnipeg again, the Senators play a major role in the evolution of the ranking of the North Division.

In Saturday’s final meeting between the teams this season, the Jets will look to avenge their 2-1 loss to the Senators on Monday, a game that was largely stolen thanks to Gustavsson’s work in the Senators’ net.
