WEIRTON — On Tuesday, the Weir High volleyball team struggled to keep momentum from swinging them out of their game.

Coach Fran Capaldi’s Red Riders have taken what she hopes will be a big step in learning how to deal with those key moments in Tuesday’s games, and did so in a hostile environment on the road to the rival of the city, Madonna, to sweep the host 3-0. Blue gifts.

“It feels good to get this victory” Capaldi said. “We had a bit of a slump so it’s good to get through it and we still love coming here and playing. It excites our girls. This can be a turning point for us. »

Weir High (3-7) prevailed, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19, but led the second and third sets by just one out of two multi-pointers and was able to fend off Madonna (3-3) when it looked like the momentum was about to change.

“There were a few points where the momentum could have changed, and that’s really what’s held us back in recent games, those are points that have turned the momentum around,” Capaldi said. “I’m happy to see that we managed to get through and finally win those sets and the match.

“We always know coming here that it’s going to be a big game and a big crowd, so it boosts our confidence to see that we can get into an atmosphere like this and get a win.”

Madonna, for her part, seemed to get stronger as the match progressed, which made coach Mike Orecchio optimistic afterwards, but just couldn’t find a way to take a lead and sustain the match.

“We’re scrappy – we’re young and we’re small, but we’re scrappy,” said Orecchio. ” We are well. We have a lot of season left, and the OVACs and the tournament are what matter most. We will see (Weir) again and we will be ready.

“We got better over time. The nerves kind of set in early and I think that was one of the factors in the opening sets.

For the Red Riders, Maleea Faulks had four aces, six kills, two digs and a block, Brayley Lash had six kills, an ace and two blocks, Mea Kaufman had seven assists, two digs, two aces and a kill and Kylie Dean had nine aces and seven assists.

“They all hustled and they all did their job,” Capaldi said.

Statistics were not available for Madonna.
